Vacancy for Biodiversity Officer at WRC + Hamilton News Highlighs Biodiversity Community Groups

Posted 6 years, 2 months ago    0 comments

Vacancy for Biodiversity Officer at WRC

Waikato Regional Council (the main funder of the Waikato Biodiversity Forum) is recruiting for a Biodiversity Officer in our Natural Heritage Team, due to one of our staff moving across into a new position in the Biosecurity Animal Pests Team.

This is a fulltime role suitable for someone with an ecology/environmental science degree and at least 5 years’ experience in biodiversity management. Ideally, the candidate would have practical experience and knowledge in all aspects of ecological restoration including developing ecological restoration plans, working with community conservation groups, plant and animal pest management, providing technical advice and running our Small Scale Community Initiatives Fund.

It’s a great role, within a small but well-connected team and you get to work all over the Waikato region with a good mix of office and field work.

If this sounds like you, please check out the role description and information here:

https://careers.waikatoregion.govt.nz/jobdetails/ajid/c48l7/Biodiversity-Officer,8325.html

Applications close 15 October.

Happy to talk further and provide more detail

Judy

It’s a really exciting celebration we are planning for our regional community with Joe Harawira (link to RNZ interview), Storyteller extraordinaire, performing, Clare St Pierre sharing how her community group managed to prepare Pirongia and the surrounding areas for the arrival of kokako, as well as Paula Southgate talking engagingly and knowledgeably about the environment.

There will be an opportunity to hang out with the Conservation Dogs, network, and for the kids, to make models of their favourite species from our team of animations.

Free trap packs will also be available, with the tunnels produced through a partnership with the Department of Corrections.

So, please encourage your favourite people to RSVP

Thanks

Jane

Kauri Dieback Public Meeting

The Kauri Dieback Programme invites you to a public meeting about the National Pest Management Plan for kauri. This plan will set out rules under the Biosecurity Act 1993 for more consistent and effective management of kauri dieback disease nationally. We want your input to ensure we’ve got the right plan to protect kauri into the future.

Public meetings

Here are the locations, times and venues for public meetings we’d like to see you at.

Auckland

Kokako Lodge

235 Falls Road

Hunua

Saturday 1 September

6.30pm to 9.00pm

Thames

Thames War Memorial Hall

Corner of Mary and Queen Streets

Sunday 2 September

6.30pm to 9.00pm

Hamilton

Waikato Regional Council offices

Monday 3 September

6.30pm to 9.00pm

Katikati

Katikati War Memorial Hall

Main Road

Tuesday 4 September

6.30pm to 9.00pm

Why are we asking you to get involved?

We think you have an interest in strengthening protection for kauri. And protecting kauri requires a collective effort.

We received lots of excellent ideas and feedback for the future management of kauri dieback disease in the first consultation round. But we need you to tell us if we’re on the right track and have reflected these ideas in the refreshed strategy and the National Pest Management Plan. We’d also like you to tell us what you think of our ideas for the management agency (the organisation) that will implement the plan.

 How to get involved

The second round of consultation is open from 20 August to 10 September 2018. If you can’t make a public meeting, or even if you do, you can still make a submission. The information we want your feedback on will be live on our website on 20 August 2018, when the consultation is open. We’ll let you know when it’s ready.

For more information about the consultations this year and to download a poster promoting them that you can share, visitwww.kauridieback.co.nz/consultation. You can also email us at KauriConsultation@mpi.govt.nz if you have any questions.

Arthur Hinds Student Scholarship

The Arthur Hinds Student Scholarship has been launched, in recognition of Arthur’s legacy, passion and dedication to conservation and his years of contribution to Waikato and Coromandel communities.

I encourage you to share this scholarship with your networks and any tertiary student that has a connection to the Coromandel area, and currently studying natural resource management-related programmes – this scholarship is based at the Whitianga office and will be working with the Coromandel DOC staff over summer periods. Arthur was passionate about conservation and supporting young people’s learning about it.
